Experience at MiniBooNE
- Hardware & Software
My primary service responsibility to
MiniBooNE has been to manage and work on the main data acquisition system.
Initially, I installed some of the data acquisition (DAQ) hardware system,
tested and developed early versions of the DAQ, and
performed administrative (sysadmin) tasks. As I became more knowledgeable
about the system, I provided many improvements to the design. I also assisted
with the initial commissioning of the DAQ electronics
with the Los Alamos electronics group.
My additional contributions are in the basic design of many
of the raw data structures, the event time standard,
the final form of the zero suppression algorithm, and the creation
of diagnostic routines that help debug hardware and software. In
addition, I have also addressed the concerns of other experimenters
regarding the DAQ, which occasionally resulted in design changes.
The DAQ was ready well before beam arrived in
September 2002, and had already taken a considerable amount
of calibration and cosmic data by that time.
I compiled and produced
documentation giving expert level detail on the system,
and basic level detail for use in data analysis. I also
created monitoring tools to ensure
rapid response to problems with the DAQ while in operation.
Additionally, I have made needed additions to the
MiniBooNE Analysis Framework to incorporate DAQ diagnostics and
data.
I also assisted in the design of the
Nearline (data-file management & monitoring), UberDAQ (run control coordination),
and the initial design of the various auxiliary data acquisition systems.
- Analysis & Working with Students
I have directed and worked with graduate, undergraduate, and high-school students
on MiniBooNE projects and analyses.
The most notable are Chris Cox and Melanie Novak (both at Indiana University), and
Lin Wang (Columbia University). The work with Chris Cox is ongoing and involves
his thesis topic, the MiniBooNE neutral current measurement of the strange spin of the proton.
The project with Melanie Novak is a VME
Scaler project for MiniBooNE to independently monitor and log low-level signals.
Lin Wang was at the time a new graduate student who worked with me during the Summer of 2003.
I directed her Summer project looking for anti-neutrinos indicated in the ``beam follower'' data.
These are
events
that could indicate
s or other sources of secondary neutrons
such in neutral current elastic scattering. I am continuing
this analysis. I have also led efforts to add tools and generalize the
MiniBooNE Analysis Framework to facilitate this and similar analyses.
- Administration
As a liaison between Indiana University and Fermilab,
I helped acquire a $100K loan from Indiana University to Fermilab. This enabled the Fermilab
Beams Division to accomplish tasks needed during the Fall 2003 shutdown, which occurred over
a fiscal year boundary
to improve the Booster, MiniBooNE's proton source. The loan acquisition involved
meeting with the Fermilab directorate, drafting an agreement between the two
institutions, and coordinating the cost accounting of the accelerator work.
The Booster improvement tasks directly affected the proton intensity onto the MiniBooNE target.
Without the temporary funding, the rare opportunity to do this work during a single long shutdown
period would likely have been lost.
Experience at the DØ Experiment
- Physics Analysis and Computing
- Searched for the production of a neutral
technicolor signal at DØ by employing an array of
5-variable neural networks and Bayesian optimization
analysis. Performed extensive studies on the selection
of data events and on the set of neural network
training variables used to discriminate technicolor
signal events from quantum chromodynamics (QCD) and direct photon
background events. Used PYTHIA Monte Carlo to generate
background and signal events, and to compute cross-sections.
- Utilized the JETNET neural network program to search for
candidate technicolor events in physics-variable space while minimizing
background events.
- Wrote UNIX shell scripts to streamline the technicolor search
analysis, and to facilitate testing of new optimization and
neural network concepts.
- Brought to completion the search for quark compositeness
using the large-
spectrum. Used JETRAD and
PYTHIA to compute the
spectrum that would arise from
increasingly higher compositeness scales. Computed upper limits on
the quark-quark compositeness scale, set at 95% confidence, based on
DØ QCD data.
- Administered the submission and completed the
writing of the paper for the compositeness
analysis, which was accepted for publication
in June 2000.
- Devised a mass-fitter using PAW MINUIT for the
first-generation leptoquark analysis at DØ.
- Measured the trigger efficiency for
events in the End Calorimeter at DØ for use in the
-mass Phys. Rev. D
papers on the measurement of the W mass at large rapidities at DØ.
- DØ Hardware
- Worked with designer of Silicon Vertex (SVX) Sequencer
electronics boards (9U ``Eurocard'' standard) to
create testing scheme for the boards upon delivery
from manufacturer. As a critical element in the readout
pipeline from the silicon vertex detector, the fiber tracker, and
pre-shower detectors,
the 150 SVX Sequencers are a very important part of the data acquisition
hardware at DØ for Run II.
- Designed record-keeping to facilitate high level of quality
control in ``test-repair-test''
cycle for the 150 SVX Sequencer boards.
- Worked with MS Excel Visual Basic macros to
interface with the boards via VME and 1553
protocol standards. Increased efficiency of testing process
by improving existing macros and writing new code.
- Tested DØ optical fiber waveguides used to carry scintillation
light from the central fiber tracker (part of the Run II upgrade)
to an opto-electronic readout system.
- Tested DØ silicon vertex detector wafers using a
laser-based method.
Other Experience
- General Computing
- Performed data and hardware analysis in high-level and
macro languages: Physics Analysis Workstation (PAW),
UNIX shell scripts, MS Excel (Visual Basic).
- Programmed at expert level in C, FORTRAN, BASIC computer languages; experienced in C++,
PYTHON, LISP, PL/I.
- Used the Linux operating system extensively; experienced with several others, including
UNIX, Windows, DEC VMS, DOS, AS/400.
- Skilled with Concurrent Versioning System (CVS) software and document
version management tool. This was the tool used to manage all of the MiniBooNE software,
major documents, as well as the data acquisition code.
- Authored documents and presentations in LaTeX, HTML,
MS Power Point, MS Word, Word Perfect, and Star Office.
- Physics Community
- Administered, completed, and presented the publication of the DØ paper
``Limits on Quark Compositeness from High Energy Jets in
Collisions at 1.8 TeV.''
- Served as elected DØ representative to the
Graduate Student Association (GSA) at Fermilab
from Fall 1998 to Fall 1999.
- As a UEC representative, educated members of Congress and their staffs regarding the
societal importance of maintaining a strong tradition of particle
physics research (Washington, D.C., 1999).
- Organized GSA Accelerator Summer School in 1999.
- Planned and organized New Perspectives 1999 conference for graduate
students in conjunction with the GSA.
- Participated in Fermilab Users'
Executive Committee (UEC) meetings,
and reported GSA activities within the lab.
- Served as a member of the Young Physicist Issues
subcommittee of the UEC. In this capacity,
helped to organize a career seminar, and represented
graduate students' and post-docs' concerns to the UEC, and promoted improvements
in graduate student living conditions at Fermilab.
- Organized several GSA social functions at Fermilab.
- Gave tours of the laboratory and the DØ experiment

that needed more emphasis. Devised quizzes to identify
problem areas and to reinforce material already covered.
