Status of Control Room Logbook (CRL) ------------------------------------ Background ---------- The CRL was originally developed by the HEPNRC group (based at FNAL) as part of a DOE-wide electronic documentation project. At some point the documentation project was dropped and FNAL CD picked up the CRL part. It is currently in production use by D0 and is also being used by MiniBooNE and BTeV. The web page is http://www-cpd.fnal.gov/CRL/index.html The current version of the Logbook is 1.6. This has new features such as full text search of entries. The release notes are available http://www-cpd.fnal.gov/CRL/release_1_6/ReleaseNotes.html. The documentation is currently being updated http://www.fnal.gov/docs/products/crl/index.html. Using the Logbook at Soudan --------------------------- The Logbook was not really designed to be used remotely with the program running on one machine and displaying on another. It is written in Java and Java displays are known to be very slow over X-connections. The developers are aware of this problem. The nature of MINOS means that we very much want to be able to run the CRL in the mode where the server is on one machine and the display is somewhere else. I have discussed our needs with the developers and we have agreed that they will work on a client-server implementation that would meet our needs. They have agreed to have a version we can use by June 2002. I believe the product currently meets our needs as far a features go. One should note that the product works over the network it is just that the speed to draw the display is unacceptable. I have purchased one regular mini-tower PC with flat panel monitor (to minimize the amount of space it occupies on the desk in the control room). It will be running RedHat 7.1 and will be on the Server LAN. Question: We are currently using the notebook provided by Dave Demuth to make entries at Soudan. We can continue using this until the client server version of CRL is ready or we can switch to the CRL on the machine above which can probably be at the mine and operational by the end of March if I get my act together. The longer we use the notebook the more entries we have to upload into CRL. The drawback would be the CRL display performance if you were trying to run over the network. Configuring the Logbook for MINOS --------------------------------- I have been configuring pages that match the existing notebook pages. I have duplicated some of what is currently there. It is possible to put automatic entries into the logbook from other processes which I have tested by have not implemented yet. I will use this to make automatic run start/end entries from the information in the database for example. Web access ---------- A web server will be running on the logbook machine which will allow collaborators to view what is happening at the detector. Annotations of web page is supported providing you have a username/password for CRL. For some examples of what web pages would look like take a look at http://www-cpd.fnal.gov/CRL/users.htm for D0 and CMS. This page also has some screen shots of what the logbook looks like. Other screen shots can be found in the documentation.
