During both the install, and the configuration, any number of machines can be contacted. It is probrubly a good idea to keep this to a minimun, because then you are dependant on yet another machine that has to be up, and configured correctly.

For a typical farm worker node, we touch one other machine during the configuration (Act 2), and this is only to grab one file.
