MuScat and MICE: Experimental verification of ionization cooling techniques

The need for muon cooling in a future neutrino factory is established and the proposed solution, ionization cooling, explained. Two experiments, MuScat and MICE, designed respectively to measure the multiple scattering of muons and demonstrate the successful cooling of a beam of muons, are discussed.
