Why do I prefer to be called Haryo ?

My first name, Suharyo, is of the form [Su] + [NAME], where [NAME] is either a noun or adjective. It is a very common form of name for Javanese people. A similar pattern can also be observed in Indian names such as Sudeshna, Supriya, Sudarshan.

It is a very common practice in Javanese culture to address someone with name of the form [Su] + [NAME] just by [NAME], as an abbreviations. Thus 'Suharyo' becomes 'Haryo'. I've been called 'Haryo' as far I can remember since childhood, that I feel awkward if someone calls me 'Suharyo'. So the name 'Suharyo' is reserved only for official businesses, and people who knows me in person always call me 'Haryo'. Similar case exist in other cultures (William -- Bill, Lucian -- Luc, Keisuke -- Kei, Robert -- Bob, Margarita -- Rita, etc).

Interesting trivia: I have never met in person somebody else who has the same first name as mine.
