The problem with fuses.
When things don't go as advertised.
To meet safety requirements fuses were required on all DC outputs.
Inline automotive fuses
were the initial choice but had serious consequences. After a month or more some of the
fuse holders began to fail.

heavier alternative fuse holder was tried with similar results
. The main problem was eliminating the buildup of heat.
After some testing it was found that
3AG glass fuses
with bakelite holders could be used without problems.
