Ken Schumacher's PGP Public Keys

When I first put up this page I was using PGP v2.6. Since then, I have migrated to GPG (Gnu Privacy Guard). My original key has been imported into GPG and I continue to use it since it is well established and well signed.

In Oct 2009, I became an Introducer for the Gossamer Spider Web of Trust. I created a new key before the GPG key signing event at the 2009 LISA conference, held in Baltimore in November. I also used that key at LISA 2010 in San Jose, CA. That key is the one that I had initially added a GSWoT UID onto.

In Dec 2012, I hosted another GPG key signing event, this time at the 2012 LISA conference in San Diego, CA. I created a new more secure 4096 key before that event. It is cross-signed by my other active keys. I submitted this key to GSWoT in Jan 2013. I intend to use this as my primary key going forward.

My Public Keys:

My 4096-bit public key (2012) for the LISA 2012 conference.

This is my primary key for OpenPG usage. I would like to cross-sign this key with all those whom I have cross-signed any of my earlier keys.

This key ID was created for the GPG key signing BoF at the LISA 2012 conference in San Diego, CA. I wanted to have a 4096-bit key. I made my personal e-mail the primary on this one. I included UIDs for Work and GSWot as well. Note that at the conference, I had not yet gotten this key signed by GSWoT.

I have also set an expiration date on this key, originally 2020-12-12. The thought is that if I lose access to the secret key, as I have with my very oldest key, the key will automatically expire on that date. If I am still using this key in 2020, I can extend the expiration date then.

Update 01 Oct 2013 I have added a new UID to this key with my new kschumacher@cacert.org e-mail address.

The key is available on public key servers or you can click here for the file kschu.2012.asc (an ASCII Armored version of this key). PGP Key Statistics (as of 11/28/2017): MSD: 4.8131 Ranking: 5,414

Public key (2003) for "Ken Schumacher <n9kju@amsat.org>"

This is a personal key, created with GPG using a 2048 byte signing key before the LISA 2003 Conference. This key pair is kept off-line and is not kept on any hard drive of mine. It exists on a USB Flash Drive and is backed up to a CDR. I use it for personal e-mail via the Amsat address (shown above) and have used it from other e-mail addresses (ie. gmail.com) as well. The Amsat address is through a forwarding service based on my Amatuer Radio callsign. It actually forwards emails to my mailbox at whatever ISP I am currently using. While I may occasionally change ISP, this address should never change.

1024 byte key (1997) for "Kenneth A. Schumacher <kschu@fnal.gov>"

This is the key I use at work. It is used for all Systems Admin. situations where use of a key is required. When I became involved in Internet NEWS (INN) administration, I started using the built-in PGP authentication on several control features. This is the original key which I have had signed at professional gatherings where they have hosted key signing sessions.

The key is available on public key servers or you can click here for the file kschu.asc (an ASCII Armored version of my key). PGP Key Statistics (as of 11/28/2017): MSD: 4.5811 Ranking: 2,534

Public Key Servers

The best place to get the current version of most keys is from the owner of the key. That's why I have linked ascii armored export files for each of my key's above. The next best place is one of the public key servers. However, there is a warning that has to go along with this. Anyone can upload a key to a public key server. Care must be taken to ensure that the key you use has the appropriate signitures on it and that you are comfortable with the trustworthyness of the key.

The surfnet.nl Keyserver

You may have noticed by now that I like to see how my keys rank on the PGP Pathfinder and Key Statistics website. The statistics on that site are recalculated weekly on Sunday night. The use public keys that are part of the Strong Set as found on the surfnet.nl keyserver. So when you upload your own keys with whatever signatures you have, I recommend you upload to surfnet.nl.

The MIT PGP Public Key Server

HTTP Gateway Example:

This comes from MIT, so it used to be the one that everyone used. The form below will submit your key lookup via http to the MIT site.

Lookup PGP Key:

GSWoT - Gossimer Spider Web of Trust

I became an introducer for the Gossamer Spider Web of Trust (GSWoT) in Oct 2009. I won't try to write a better description than you can find on the GSWoT About Us webpage. Our Web of Introducers affirm that we will strictly adhere to our practice guidelines. If you see a GSIntroducer signature on a PGP key, you can be reasonably certain the key belongs to the person named in the certificate.
